Keeping Cool

The air con unit is not a pretty sight but it's doing a wonderful job of keeping us cool.  It only gets wheeled out when the temperatures are very high here.  The thermometer outside is currently showing 38 degrees Celsius (100 f) in the shade.  Even Rick has finally acknowledged that it's hot outside and he should stay indoors.

It was quite fresh and cool at six this morning when I took Rick out for his morning walk but as soon as the sun rises its fiery head above the horizon the temperature soars.  I spent a pleasant morning outside in the shade on the terrace reading; this climate makes me very lazy.

What do you do to stay cool?

  1. My answer to your question Sue is to live in the North East of England. Here today the temperature is around twenty one degrees, there is a lot of cloud and a nice, cooling breeze. I am definitely not a hot weather animal and could not survive these terrible temperatures in Spain at the moment.

  2. We haven't had too hot of a summer, mostly in the high 80;s and low 90's, but because of all the rain it's so humid here. So we've used more air conditioning than we've ever used before and I don't like air conditioning, it dries me out.

  3. It was 29C here. To stay cool it is best indoors because my house is cool although in these temperatures even the house is pretty hot. I am not bothered too much by the heat and sleep well.

  4. Since it's up to (or close to) those temperatures here all summer long, air conditioning is a necessity. Still, it makes the power bill go sky-high and it's best to only use the least amount necessary. We usually draw all the blinds during the day, and try to eat meals that require little or no cooking, since the oven heats up the kitchen. Any physical activity needs to happen early in the morning or late at night after the heat subsides. Oh, and I love watching movies that feature cold, frozen landscapes during the height of summer!

  5. Stay inside with the drapes closed at least until the sun goes down. Then I open up all the windows and try to catch whatever cool breezes there are.

  6. We were working outside all day today, but went in the pool when we were all done. Bliss! -Jenn

  7. The early morning dog walk is almost the best bit of the day. We're also carrying buckets of water down to two horses every day; their owner seems to have forgotten he owns them! The pool is our refuge; no cooling system here, other than an electric fan.

  8. Very hot here too. Our apartment is so much cooler (and warmer in winter) after an external insulation was put on the condiminium three years ago. Our energy bill has dropped considerably since then as we don't switch on the AC as often anymore. The apartment remains fresh if we keep the sun curtains on the balcony down, the blinds down and the double glazed doors and windows closed. I drink plenty of water.

  9. To stay cool, I put on my Indian cheesecloth shirt, my designer sunglasses and I chew gum like an American G.I.. It's also important to walk in a cool manner - like a leopard stalking its prey. I also click my fingers and hum tunes by Nirvana or Frank Zappa.
