Alcoholic cherries! I soak the cherries in a mix of eau de vie, vodka, brandy, syrup and allspice. Put them in airtight jars, place them in a dark cupboard and retrieve them about Christmas time. The cherries will be delicious and the liqueur just wicked.
I am currently cowering indoors while a storm passes overhead. This old house is literally shaking and rattling with the thunder. Rick is hiding under a chair with his favourite tennis ball.
I am surprised you leave your computer on. I unplug everything, Sky, phone, broadband, in big storms. Trained by my mother when the only gadget we had was the phone in the cold hall.
ReplyDeletePaul said I would be okay because it was intra cloud lightning as opposed to forked lightning. And I believed him! (But I was wearing rubber gloves to be on the safe side.) My gran would never allow cutlery out during a storm.

ReplyDeleteI don't unplug everything when there's a storm, although I suppose I should. Fortunately Inca doesn't seem to mind thunder or lightening, but usually sleeps under a table - just to make sure !

ReplyDeleteThere are a lot of recipes for cherries in brandy but this is the easy recipe passed to me by my neighbour Philippe’s mum, Christiane.
DeletePack unpitted cherries with trimmed stems into sterilised jars. Make a simple syrup from half water and half sugar. Add one third syrup, one third vodka and one third brandy or eau de vie. Place in cool, dark cupboard for at least six weeks, swirling the jars occasionally. Add more sugar depending on taste. I add a couple of allspice berries for extra taste.
Why would you not pit the cherries first? Do you pit them just prior to use instead?
DeleteThe pits and stems add flavour but you can remove the pits beforehand if you prefer.
DeleteWe had The Storm late last night and Ted was again all of a quiver and drooling. I had a couple of hours up with him, holding his paw until it stopped and he slept. I got to bed around 03:30 and then our visiting dog honked up on the bedroom carpet. They both were fighting fit again by 06;30 ready for their walk. Had a couple of illicit cherries on the way.

DeleteWe had a bit of a midday thunderstorm here. I actually like a nice rumbly storm (not too violent). My batty old grandmother used to scare the life out of me during storms. Don't stand near the radio. Don't stand in a doorway. Don't stand by the clock. Don't stand near a wall! -Jenn

ReplyDeleteWe used to pick some special sour Cherries for putting in eau de vie. I haven't done any for years. Not only did we have that storm, but Lumberjack was host to a day-long clay pigeon shoot. The noise was endless.
