Feeling Flat

Rick waiting for the girls to come home
It’s a grey and damp day. After weeks of excitement and preparation the house feels empty, too tidy, too quiet.  Even Rick looks miserable and is mooching around looking for the girls.  There is a chance that Sarah might get back to England for the Christmas holidays and Kat will have some leave so that is something to look forward to even if I have to cook a nut roast alongside the turkey.

In the meantime I am looking forward to October in France and hopefully we will get some more sunny days.  The potager is looking a bit sad at the moment but there are still a few tomatoes left on the vine, a handful of raspberries, and a few peppers, aubergines and courgettes.  Tonight Paul is cooking duck and I’m going to make a raspberry and apple crumble.  Comfort food. Autumn is here.

    1. I had some raspberries and a couple of apples that needed using so it seemed like a nice way to use them.

  2. I wish October stays warm; I have bell peppers that need ripening. This summer I watered the flower pots on my balcony with the water I'd washed red and yellow bell peppers with. There probably was some seeds in the water, and now I have four huge plants growing, and two plants have peppers on them. I've counted 6 peppers in all. It was a surprise. I am so pleased with this.
In less than three months time and you will see your beautiful daughters again.
    Greetings Maria x

    1. It never gets any easier but they have to live their own lives.

  4. Your potager sounds like mine (except the Raspberries). To compensate for the lack of Blackberries, we've been reduced to buying a bag of frozen mixed berries for our crumbles.

  6. Poor sweet Rick, missing his girls. And you too, of course, but something about Rick watching for them tugs my heartstrings.

  7. A certain melancholy can settle about us as autumn arrives and the days grow shorter. It's a sadness that we also notice in the natural world. We have to be kind to ourselves. The duck and the crumble will help. I'm just about to begin preparing our roast lamb Sunday dinner with leeks, carrots and of course the pièce de résistance - Yorkshire Pudding!

    1. The crumble was very good. I used Mary Berry's museli recipe for the topping, Paul liked it and said it was less claggy than my usual crumble.

    1. It must be so hard for you right now Rachel. Christmas is a tough time for a lot of people, I will send Paul out to Oz if Sarah can't get back. I would rather be on my own with Rick than think of her by herself.

    1. It was! I used a mueseli crumb mixed with butter for the topping that made it really crunchy.

    1. Yes, Cro and Lady M live just the other side of the woods. We met for the first time in the dog food aisle of the supermarket just a few weeks ago!
