I did some baking this morning. I never really understood the baking frenzy that took off during lockdown but as a result I was unable to buy my normal type of flour so I ended up buying a Polish brand - Lubella fluffy cake flour. I have to admit that I have never succeeded in making a fluffy, light cake - rock cakes and fruit cakes are my forte. I added a generous teaspoon of baking powder and my rock cakes came out of the oven looking as they always do. Definitely not fluffy.
The heat was too much for one of the gladioli plants on the terrace and it keeled over and broke its stem. I then had to cut a second bloom to keep the first one company in the vase.
Kat has finished puzzle number two and is now starting her third puzzle. (Yes, that is a cucumber on the table, she likes to eat them whole as a snack.)
That looks my kind of puzzle - lots of little pictures to concentrate on rather than a scene with lots of sky and trees!

DeleteWish I could grow gladiolas but my new clematis did produce three blooms this summer. Time for me to do some baking as my tennis friends scoffed all my shortbread this morning!

DeleteI've never heard of fluffy flour. Your cakes look very good and definitely not fluffy. My garden is dry too. I'm impressed how quickly Kat completes her puzzles. Your glads are beautiful. Mine got eaten by deer so no glads in my garden.
ReplyDeleteThis is the first time we've grown gladioli. They've done well but they need some sort of support as they grow so tall.

ReplyDeleteThose rock cakes look tasty, much better than my scones, which always have the texture of granite and end up in the bin. I've not had any success, even using an old Delia recipe!

Fluffy scones would be wonderful but mine were always pretty heavy.
DeleteMy grandmother made rock cakes and kept them in an enamel bin. My Dad, her s-i-l, prefered them when they had aged. They were not to my taste but in those days shopbought Battenberg was a treat for me on a visit. I have always been partial to marzipan.
ReplyDeleteI've always found marzipan too sweet. My rock cakes are not 'proper' rock cakes because I use oats, honey and nuts in addition to cake fruit.
