Chat Group
Jenny, my new neighbour, called for me this morning and took me along to the local tea rooms for the ladies’ chat group. It was pretty much what I expected, a group of about a dozen ‘mature’ ladies whose hobbies include knitting and tapestry for the local church kneelers. Not really my cup of tea but it does force me to get out and meet some local people. No idle chat here though, the session in led by the local Methodist Church minister. She introduces specific topics to discuss, all a bit churchy. I think I’m too irreverent for this kind of thing! Don’t laugh but I think I may have agreed to knit some poppies for Remembrance Sunday.
Paul is going to the men’s equivalent next month. They have a guest speaker. And it’s held at the pub!

That was nice of your neighbour to include you, but if "churchy" isn't really your thing, this doesn't sound like the group for you. Isn't there a book club that's just a front for drinking wine and having a laugh? I did grin a bit about the poppies. Get knitting! -Jenn
ReplyDeleteBook club/wine club would definitely be more appealing.
DeleteOh dear! I can't think of anything positive to say about that.
ReplyDeleteGrim isn't it!
DeleteOh dear. Should have realised. They got me to attend a service and they all hugged me. P never let me forget it.
ReplyDeleteI need a t-shirt that says 'please don't touch'.
DeleteI was once invited to a Wives' Fellowship meeting without knowing what it was all about. However, when I arrived and discovered that the Bishops wife was a member, and that they started with prayers, I quickly realised that I was perhaps facing in a different direction to all of them.
ReplyDeleteHaha, I'm definitely facing in a different direction!
DeleteTrust me (as an incomer here some years ago) it is a way of getting to know locals and sooner or later meet kindred spirits.
ReplyDeleteThey only meet once a month so I shall probably give it one more try.
DeleteYes, as Weaver said ,at some point someone will give you a knowing look and you will have found a kindred spirit, hang on in there.
ReplyDeleteI shall be looking for that knowing look next time then.
DeleteI think I would prefer the men's group.
ReplyDeleteMe too but I think women are banned.
DeleteI joined a Probus club recently (do you have that in the UK?) We meet once a month for coffee, chat and a speaker. Everyone is very sociable and it's a mixed group of men and women so the chat can be quite spirited at times!
ReplyDeleteI think a mixed group would be more fun.
DeleteOh dear, too Churchie for me. What a shame! The poppies will be a good enough "in" to get you mixing a bit though. I'm disappointed, I had high hopes. It is difficult to get to know people in a new place without membership of some sort and for women that does usually mean some sort of handcraft I'm afraid. I joined the CWA here when I retired as we had lived here for 16 years but since I was working had no time for social clubs and therefore didn't know anyone in the neighbourhood. After about 4 years I had had enough but came away with a new set of kindred spirits who I now meet up with for Book club, Mahjong and lunch. Only one day a week but a different thing each week. Perfect !
ReplyDeleteIt's so much easier to make friends in the workplace isn't it? It seems to be all about knitting around here and that's really not my thing.
DeleteJoin the WI; I believe they're much more fun these days.
ReplyDeleteI'm not taking my clothes off.
DeleteWell...you tried ! You need to find a meeting in the pub too.
ReplyDeleteDo you meet people while out with Rick? I have met some good, now close friends, when out with the dog.
Beware of book clubs.......ours is very casual.....we are a group of old friends mainly and we spend more time chatting about our families and drinking wine than talking about the book. Some clubs are much more formal though, and each person has to give a short speech about the book...not my " thing" at all. I have either enjoyed a book or not! Can't always explain why.
I think I can second that, beware of book clubs!
DeleteI think I need a wine club.
DeleteThe men say it's a "guest speaker" but it's usually a forty year old lap dancer from Gainsborough called Veronica. She once met Kevin Keegan and her favourite pizza topping is tuna.
ReplyDeleteDo you know Veronica then?
DeleteShhhhhhh!
