Hey Hey I saved a lizard today
Everybody's happy now
The bad thing's gone away
And everybody's happy now
The good thing's here to stay
Please let it stay

After a week of damp, drizzly
and stormy weather the sun finally came out and we had lunch on the
terrace. My glass of rosé disappeared
rather rapidly and after I looked longingly at my empty glass Paul told me if I
wanted another refill I would have to go and get it myself. As I headed to the wine cellar I noticed a
lizard swimming for its little life in Rick’s water bowl. He couldn’t quite reach Paul’s patented
lizard ladder so I scooped it up and put it on dry land. My good deed for the day. If I hadn’t been in search of another glass
of wine the poor lizard would have certainly drowned.
Rick and I took a little
saunter down the hill earlier to gather some green walnuts. Paul is very sceptical but I couldn’t resist
trying Cro’s recipe for pickled walnuts.
Rick managed to snatch some long grass while I was busy scrumping, he
will probably barf on the carpet later tonight.
Don't forget that you have to leave the pickled walnuts; preferably for a year or more. They then become quite soft and delicious. The amount of sugar you add to the vinegar is a matter of choice, but don't hold back. Good luck.
ReplyDeleteThey won't be ready for Christmas then?
DeleteYes, but they're even better if kept longer.
DeleteI hooked out two frogs from a friends swimming pool last week and before you could say Ribit one was back in. Two days later a frog was floating on the steps dead. Put it in a flower pot and by the next day something had had it. What do they say in the Lion King Circle of Life song, Kuma Potata? Wine was being served at the time.
ReplyDeleteI shudder to think what Rick would have done if he'd gone for a drink.
DeleteWell done! Lizzards are said to bring blessings in the house. The bigger ones can save themselves; the smaller ones need help.
ReplyDeleteWe often get lizards in the house!
DeleteWho knew wine could be the saving of a lowly lizard? He's very lucky that your first glass went to so quickly!
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the walnuts (and with Rick not puking later).
I think I should get wine re-fills more often, just in case a lizard is drowning.
DeleteHope the pickling turns out well Sue. I absolutely adore pickled walnuts.
ReplyDeleteNever had them before, it will be a first for me.
DeleteInteresting that you used to live in Bainbridge Sue. I have quite a few friends who live there now. I play ukulele with a friend one Thursday a month for the residents of Sycamore Hall to sing - we have a lovely afternoon.
ReplyDeleteThe travellers have just gone through last week en route to Appleby and by all accounts made a bit of a mess on the green but it all looked pristine today.
The villagers are very proud of their green.
DeleteThe most convoluted excuse I have ever heard for drinking more alcohol. It saves lizards!
ReplyDeleteIt did yesterday!
Delete"See ya later love! I am off down t'pub to save a few lizards!"
DeleteAs good an excuse as any!
DeleteI saved a tiny mouse from my pool last week. Unfortunately the week before I had to fish out a drowned possum and dispose of it - a gruesome task!
ReplyDeleteI love lizards, but sadly none around here in Herts ! I am going to try the recipe for strawberry and cinnamon torte that you featured a while ago...it looked and sounded so delicious! I shall take it to my granddaughters birthday lunch tomorrow ..not that she will try it but hopefully others will! ( she will be 8)
ReplyDeletePlenty of lizards here! My favourite is the European green lizard, he is much bigger than the little brown ones and a fantastic blue and green colour but is very shy. Hope the torte comes out well for you.
DeleteWell...it looks OK, but not eaten any yet! I was worried as the cake mix seemed very dry. We will have it with cream.
