Cherries
Our two cherry trees produced well this Spring and we enjoyed eating the plump, sweet fruits. Yesterday Paul came back from a visit to our neighbour, Philippe, with another trug full of cherries. I filled three more jars with brandied cherries, put four boxes in the refrigerator and then spent this morning de-stoning the remainder to make jam. I wish I hadn’t bothered, the jam didn’t set and I now have three jars of cherry syrup. Ah well, I shall use it when I’m baking cakes.
Earlier today we saw Philippe on our way home from our afternoon walk. He waved a bucket at us and said “come and get some more cherries....”

You are very lucky! I haven't eaten a single cherry this year yet. Premium cherries are little too expensive here at the moment.
ReplyDeleteGreetings Maria x
We've had a bumper crop this year.
DeleteActually, they are great frozen, too! They are so small, they don't freeze rock hard, and on a hot summer day, are delicious to eat chilled that way! (oh how I wish I was close enough to help you get rid of some of them!)
ReplyDeleteI like that idea of eating them frozen.
DeleteI wish I could help you with that problem! Cherries don't grow here and when they're shipped in, they cost a fortune.
ReplyDeleteI love eating them fresh off the tree but there is only a certain amount I can eat!
DeleteI would love to help you eat them - much prefer cherries to strawberries. We are too far north for them here but I buy them from before Christmas until the season finishes in the middle to late January.
ReplyDeleteSweet cherries are hard to beat for taste but strawberries smell wonderful.
DeleteThey are beautiful! I love the wooden trug. Is it old? -Jenn
ReplyDeleteI bought the trug a few years ago at a car boot sale, I think it is quite old.
DeleteWe must be in a different weather zone!
ReplyDeleteBut you have raspberries!
DeleteOur ex-neighbours used to feed us all with the fruit off their trees. The new neighbours have fed the birds this year. Sigh!
ReplyDeleteThat's a shame, bet the birds are happy though.
DeleteOooh, send some over here please ! I love cherries, but they are always very expensive for just a small amount.
ReplyDeleteCherries were always an expensive treat when we lived in the UK.
DeleteI noticed the cherries in the supermarket yesterday, and it would appear there is a glut here too, judging by the way they were stacked high. I bought about 400g., choosing from loose ones, rather than pre-packaged.
ReplyDeleteYou could pour your cherry syrup over vanilla ice cream - it would make a tasty addition.
I poured some on my natural yoghurt, it was good.
DeleteThey say that French cherries are the sweetest of them all.
ReplyDeleteSome are sweeter than others...
DeleteI was just consulting my Pam Corbin preserving book, and she says that Cherries have very little pectin. Red Currants, on the other hand, are very high in pectin, so if you have a bush it might be worth trying to combine the two. I made Red Currant and Tayberry jam today, it set perfectly.
ReplyDeleteI'll stick with brandied cherries in future, it's much easier!
