A bit of a project

sloping rose hedge to disguise Rick's wire fence
It is two years ago that we first viewed our bungalow in Lincolnshire.  We weren’t particularly looking for a bungalow and we were certainly not looking for a project.  But when Paul and I saw this place we could both see the potential hiding behind the rather dated, tired and overgrown property.  Whilst it would have been marvellous to move straightaway into a new and perfect home, the work we carry out ourselves to make this right for us gives us immense satisfaction.

one of the first jobs, a fence to make the garden Rick proof

Last year was all about the big projects – new bathroom, new kitchen, new heating boiler, new electrics, and some hefty weeding and clearing in the garden.  This year we have been continuing with the smaller projects such as painting and decorating.  New garage doors are next on the shopping list but we have held back on this during lockdown.

2018 we eventually found the end of the terrace after clearing overgrown bushes and ivy

2019 another view of this area with new planting
today - the plants are getting bigger and the Tamarisk has just finished flowering (spot the new bench!)

Paul finally managed to source some white gloss paint last week and tackled the horrid looking garage door at the side of the property.  I was just so pleased to see the ghastly net curtain disappear.  Another job ticked off the list!

same door - newly painted

February 2019 removing the plastic roof at the side of the garden sheds that covered  a sunken pit full of rubbish

We filled in the pit and put some seed down to make a grassed area. A clematis and climbing rose are valiantly trying to grow on the north facing wall.

  1. Your gardens are gorgeous and the type of look and plantings that I like. Lots of flowering plants like clematis and roses, a nice patio, and your new bench and your door that was painted and looks like new are all attractive touches.

    1. We were lucky to inherit a lot of nice established plants like the peonies and the Tamarisk but we have added a lot of our own too.

  6. You have done well, we've been in this house for 3 years and like you are now on the little jobs, having had new kitchen, bathroom, fitted wardrobes and a massive change in the garden, which had large conifers right up to the house.

    1. You will understand some of the upheaval and hard work involved Chris. I hope you are happy in your new house.

  7. You have achieved a lot in a relatively short time and of course you now have the satisfaction of saying, "We did that!". "Owning" a house isn't just about the money you hand over just before you move in.

    1. It's taken a while but we do truly 'own' this place now, it's home.

  9. Marvellous what you have achieved in just a year. You must both have put a lot of sweat and tears into the reclamation.

  10. I was under the impression that it was all new and shiney. You've done a lot, but I suppose you were used to after your home here. Well done.

  11. Well done upgrades and obviously done with skill and tasteful direction. A pleasure to live there and I hope that the three of you are not missing France.

    1. I think we will always miss our French home but this is a pretty good consolation prize. It will certainly be easier to manage in the long term.

  13. A man's got to have a project, and a wife to keep a sharp eye on things!
I wonder, who puts a net curtain in the garage, how strange! Is that really the same door - it looks brand new.
