Mr Toad

the toad is that dark blob just before the driveway on the right
It was raining cats and dogs this morning when I took Rick out for his walk.  The water was streaming down Washdyke Lane.  A toad suddenly hopped out in front of us.  I tried to get a close shot with my camera but Rick had also spotted the toad and was intent on trying to jump on it.  As I wrestled with an excited dog and my camera phone, his lead became entangled around my legs and almost sent me toppling.   I put my phone away and we sploshed on down the lane giving Mr Toad a wide berth.

As there was no one foolish enough (apart from Rick and me) to be out in the pouring rain I stopped and picked some cherries off the trees in the Avenue.  I think they are wild cherries, smaller than the cultivated version but perfectly sweet and edible.

Rick giving some wild eye (he actually loves being dried off with his towel)

I think the sunshine will be back for the weekend.

  1. Hurrah for Mr Toad! He lives to fight another day and due to your bravery he did not end up as a doggy treat for Greedy Rick!

  2. Sounds as though Washdyke Lane is aptly named!
Strangely enough I potted a toad on the terrace about a week ago. Inca was giving it undue attention, and the ones we have here are often poisonous. They are ugly looking warty things - so I hoped she hadn't decided to make it a pet! Years ago our neighbour's had a pond that attracted the toads, which bred like mad, and became something of a nuisance. The pond was concreted over, but every so often we find a stray toad trying to make it's way back to next door's garden.

  3. I like Rick's raincoat. It all looks like a great combination of life in terms of rain, dog, toad, walking, and has a happy feel in two pictures. I love the towel picture. My cats also like being towelled dry. xx

    1. It's his favourite towel. I try to wrap him in it before he shakes himself.

  5. It has rained here all afternoon quite heavily - but the gardens will still be pleased. Rick looks adorable with his ears pricked watching that toad. That dog fell on his feet when you took him on - he looks a real pal and I suspect still a pup at heart.

  6. Here in AZ, we have poisonous toads that come out during late monsoon season. They kill dogs, just by dogs licking on them. You have to react fast to rinse out the dog's mouths, even large dogs, or the dogs die. :o

    1. Yes, I've heard about toads being poisonous. I don't know if that applies to all kinds of toad.

  7. Benji was surprised to find a frog in a bucket just outside our back door. He lowered his head to take a sniff and the frog JUMPED! Benji yelped and fell backwards down the 4 steps on to the lawn so whilenhe was getting over the shock, I grabbed the bucket, which still held the frog, and laid it on its side on the other side of the garden gate. Out of reach of a very curious BenjiDog. (It was still in my garden but away from danger.)
