Garden Design

At 8.00 p.m. last night Paul and I stood outside the front door and, feeling slightly foolish, tentatively started to clap.  Not far away we could hear the sound of other people in the village clapping until the sound got louder and louder.  I didn’t feel foolish anymore, just terribly sad.

Another beautiful day here so once more we are outside.  Gardening helps us to forget the woes of the world for a moment.  One of the things that attracted me to this bungalow was the massive terrace that runs the whole width of the building.  After we had pulled all the weeds out when we moved in it looked very impressive but a little stark, too much bare stone.  Yesterday we removed some of the paving stones and filled the spaces with white gravel.  I wanted the spaces to look random, not an easy task with square pavers.   I’m quite pleased with the result and I’ve ordered some black mondo grass and blue festuca grass to plant in the gravel.  I’m hoping it will look quite contemporary and Zen like.

The ferns haven’t got their summer foliage yet but we placed some new solar powered spotlights underneath the plants last night and were very impressed with the result.

It's good to stay busy at a time like this.

  1. I like the spotlights. I don't think my little village is doing any clapping, but now I'm going to listen at 8:00. If nobody is clapping, maybe I'll try to start the trend. -Jenn

    1. I think it was a one off, to say thank you to the doctors and nurses working on the front line.

    1. That is a lot of weeding! Don't overdo it, you've got weeks of weeding ahead.

  3. I love the new look on the patio and the spot lights are great. I think my weeds are still sleeping under 3 feet of snow!

  4. Lovely to see you getting to grips with your garden (and giving me a few ideas at the same time).

  6. I must buy some good quality solar garden lights. I did have some in the past but they were cheap rubbish. They make such a difference to a night garden. It's all looking very good chez vous.

    1. Our new ones come with a separate solar panel and the spot lights give out a very bright light.

  7. Over the last couple of days I have jet washed our decking and the paving stones and paths beyond our back door. I need to do this every so often because of the build up of slippery algae and normal dirt. Looking at the paving stones on your terrace I can see that they would really benefit from jet washing and they would come up a treat. You should add it to Paul's "To Do" list:-
    1) Pour me a glass of wine
    2) Paint my toe nails
    3) Make me rustic bread
    4) Purchase a jet washer
    5) Jet wash the paving stones

    1. We already have the jet washer. Paul, because he is kind and considerate, decided not to clean the pavers on a warm and sunny day because it might annoy the neighbours. Today it is too cold for him to be outside. He will paint my toe nails later.
