This morning we drove to Gainsborough to do our weekly shop at the Tesco supermarket. I headed straight to the pet section and was dismayed to see the shelves completely empty – not even a single can or dog biscuit. Fortunately we have enough dog food at home to keep Rick fed for about four weeks, after that he will have to eat chips with the rest of us! There was no milk, rice, pasta , flour or toilet rolls. Even the wine was rationed to three bottles per customer.
Meanwhile in Australia the sisters have managed to escape the madding crowds and have pitched their tent at an idyllic, secluded site next to a creek and nearby beach. Looks like a great place to self isolate. Have fun girls.
Surely the supermarkets are going to have to start being more assertive; rather than simply asking people to be sensible they must start enforcing restraint somehow. It is obvious that the empty headed, selfish crowds don't give a whotsit about the rest of us so shelves will continue to be emptied without some sort of action.

They were restricting customers to three items today.
DeleteWhen I went to the grocery store here in upstate New York last week, a clerk was going around with a cart and a couple of cases of toilet paper rolls. She was offering the packages to people who had none already in their carts, rather than unloading them onto the shelves.

DeleteI've got a week of everything, and that includes the cats. I thought that was good. I find planning in the morning for what I want in the afternoon difficult at the best of times, a week is quite a feat for me.

DeleteI am self isolating being 87 so don't know what the shelves are like around here - but I am quite happy with my food store and at present all is well.
ReplyDeleteIt's reassuring to have some food in the cupboard. I'm hoping the supermarket shelves will be refilled soon and that we can at least get some flour and dog food.
DeleteIt is strange that in the whole world toilet paper is the required commodity. Here, too, it disappeared from the shelves.

DeleteFrom having lived "out of town" for many years I always have a good store of food. We have just been to the supermarket a day early though as we heard of shortages. There was a distraught older lady looking for flour and there was none. We were still able to get cat and dog food. Have not been able to get hand sanitiser at all and heard on the news this morning that some part of it comes from Australia and they are not exporting it now.
ReplyDeleteWe've always got about a month's worth of supplies in the house. In the long term there could still be further shortages if the supply chains are affected.
DeleteThere is some talk here that the thousands of Qantas staff who've been temporarily laid off will be helping to stack shelves in one of our big supermarket chains, and alongside the relaxing of the truck delivery rules into the shops, the stock depletion phenomena will soon be over ... That's a gorgeous campsite! A world away from the bushfire camping trip.

DeleteThe last time we were at Leclerc it was well stocked, and Lady M went to V du Pd yesterday and said everything looked normal. I wonder why this panic buying has gone so crazy in the UK..... about time it stopped.

ReplyDeleteDay five of our enforced lock down here in Spain. Chaos in the supermarket last Saturday when I went, but I understand that things have now calmed down.
There are other restrictions too - only one person allowed in a car and only one person with a trolley in the supermarket. that will stop whole families, with a trolley each, stripping the shelves - as they were last Saturday.
I guess things will balance out and the shelves will get restocked. Today there wasn't a single can of anything in the supermarket. Bizarre.
