Village Quiz

Last night we put on our coats and ventured outside into the cold to take the short walk up to the village hall.  It was the annual Rose Bowl Quiz.  I expected the hall to be cold and draughty so I wrapped up warm in a heavy sweatshirt.  Big mistake, it was really hot and I spent the evening glowing like a giant pumpkin.

Heads turned as we walked in.  Sarah, our secret weapon (she is a film and music buff), was rocking her latest ‘goth’ look with leather jacket, knee high boots and panda makeup.  “Not panda mum, it’s my smokey look.”

We had to have a name for our team so, coming from Wiltshire, we christened ourselves The Moonrakers.  We were joined by two other village newcomers, Stuart and Heather, who didn’t seem to mind being Moonrakers for the evening. The questions had a Christmas and pantomime theme.  I got into trouble for shouting out the answers.  Being deaf I can’t always gauge how loud my voice is.  The picture identification round was a hoot.
“That’s Mary Peters.”
“Don’t be ridiculous, it’s Carol Thatcher.”
“Ssssh!”
"That guy is definitely Holly somebody but I can't remember his surname."

"Who tripped Zola Budd up in the Olympics?"
"It was Mary somebody."
"They're all Marys in this round mum, it's the Mary round...."

Hot mulled wine and mince pies were served up at half time.  We had taken our own bottle of wine so we were very merry.  It was an entertaining evening.  Did we win?  We might have done if the others had listened to my answers. Or even if I could have heard the questions. Or if we could have remembered the names of A Christmas Carol’s four ghosts (we got The Ghost of Yet To Come wrong by calling him Ghost of the Future.)  Anyway we came eighth.  Out of twelve teams.

P.S.  I think I may have drunk too much wine and agreed to join a line dancing club in the New Year.

  2. Your Sarah's got lovely fingers!
Here,in winter (which is mild anyway) most people dress in layers; so, they're never really hot or cold. They can always put on or take off some piece of clothing.

  4. Good Quizing! Shame about the ears helping the others. I don't think that those hands are going to help stuff a turkey, peel a sprout or wash up.

  11. It's good that you made the effort. As well as having fun you showed you want to play a part in village life even though you have no intention of chairing the parish council.
