Filling the Gap

Paul has been busy filling in the gap between the new doors and the archway into the garden room.  He has done a good job, we just have to wait now for the plaster to dry before sanding it down and painting over.

The wallpaper in the sitting room is going to be removed but I rather like the Laura Ashley Birds of Paradise paper in the garden room and would like to keep it.  There is now a gap of about three drops above the door so my dilemma is how to cover the space.  The paper has probably been hanging for a few years and although Laura Ashley still sell this design it might not match perfectly.   I went on their website, spent ages setting up an account, and tried to order a swatch.  “Service unavailable”.  Bah!

I will visit their store and see if I can get a sample.  Otherwise I might just buy a roll and risk it.  Or I could paint a mural...

  1. I would fill that empty space with a literary quotation rather than a mural.

    1. That's a good idea, it could say "mind the gap".

  2. If it was between a mural and a taking a chance with a roll, I would risk a new roll. Above the door is not exactly a prominent strip in a main wall so if it was a tiny bit off match it would not be right in your eye, unless you are 6'6". A mural introducing some new scrolls would be very trickyt.

  3. There is something nice about all this work isn't there? I have really taken great pleasure in going through my bungalow and getting it to my liking, even though unlike you I no longer have David here to do the donkey work. I shall be quite sorry when all the changes have been made. I am nearly there and then it will be time to consider whether I might like to replace furniture, carpets or things like that, but shall leave that until the spring.

    1. I'm really enjoying seeing it gradually evolve. The new doors have made a huge difference. The prospect of knocking the kitchen wall down scares me a bit though.

  4. Maybe you could find a stencil and use a gold paint over the door. If you do it light enough it might match.

  5. Make a stencil of the wall paper...

  6. A tasteful banner could cover that area saying something profound like "Home is Where The Heart Is" or simply "Paul + Sozza'a Gaffe :)"

  7. I think I'd go with the wallpaper. Try it and if it bothers you because of the difference then find an alternative. sounds like it is all going well and the kitchen will be exciting. Perhaps you can make a video and be the lifestyle presenter like that girl on tv - Lucy with the long blonde hair . Do you know who I'm talking about?

  9. I wouldn't bother trying to match wallpaper; it's bound to have either faded or darkened. I like Mary Bolton's idea, paint in the missing bit, and don't try and hide the difference.
