Exploring Lincoln

Today we took Sarah into Lincoln to explore the Cathedral quarter of the city.  This is the olde worlde part of Lincoln with a very steep, cobbled street leading down to the lower level; the castle and cathedral are both perched up high on a hill overlooking the city. The sun was shining but it was freezing cold so our first visit was a tea room for hot drinks and toasted tea cakes.

We admired the Cathedral from the outside, it’s an awesome building, seems more imposing than Salisbury and Wells.  We didn’t go inside, we had somewhere else in mind to visit.   We made our way down Steep Hill, admiring the enticing independent and artisan shops until we passed under the old archway and into the main shopping area.  We headed straight for Thor’s Bar, a temporary Viking themed bar set in a tepee.  We sat in front of the fire pit and drank hot cider, just what we needed on such a cold day.  I didn’t see any Vikings though.

Climbing back up the hill was hard work.  We considered visiting the castle but it was going to be very cold wandering around the ramparts so we decided we would do that on another day.  Time to get home to Rick and a cup of tea.

  1. I've got a hat like yours. I have been to Lincoln once and remember it having some steep hills around the Cathedral. I hope you shopped in some of the little shops. Are you now able to leave Rick home alone?

    1. Rick seems to be fine being left at home. Think he might have come face to face with the window cleaner while we were out though. I loved the little shops - book shop, fabric shop, art shop, cheese shop, butcher, etc it was wonderful. Only went in one of the big stores for Sarah to buy her Christmas jumper.

    2. Oh great! Did she buy that red one? I love that tradition...it would have to be a Christmas singlet ( vest !) here with the humidity we've been having!

    3. Yes, she bought matching ones for herself and Kat.

  2. Did you know that for 238 years Lincoln Cathedral was the tallest building in the world?

Loved the top picture but who's that dolly bird with Sarah in the fifth photo?

    1. I didn't know that. I know Salisbury has the oldest clock and tallest spire.

  3. Is that you in the furry hat? One of our Scottish country dances is called the Lincoln Imp. He's supposed to be somewhere in the Cathedral Did you see him?

    1. Yes, that is me. We didn't have time yesterday to look round the cathedral but I shall look out for the Imp on our next visit.

  4. Beautiful city. Aren't our great cathedrals fantastic, they almost make me want to attend services (especially to sing carols). When I leave Bok alone, I always use the word 'shopping'. He now seems to understand, and goes directly to his basket.

    1. It's funny you should say that. I always say to Rick, "going shopping, look after the house" and he understands. He goes to his mat and never tries to follow us.

  5. I also tell Tess to look after the house and she does the same.
Lovely to see my Lincoln in all its glory. I went to school just down Greestone Stairs, which is by the Cathedral. The farmer and I usually went for a few days each year and stayed at The White Hart just out of your pictures. We always had a room with a Cathedral view. I miss going now that I am alone. The Lincoln Imp is high up on the wall - I have a replica on my kitchen wall.

  6. Loved our visit to the Cathedral too and the tea shop, but himself struggled with the steep hill. Lovely photos.
