Barking Mad

Rick is is a beautiful dog but, as he becomes more confident with his new surroundings, his breed traits are beginning to show.  He is extremely territorial and protective of his ‘pack’.  In town this morning he growled at a man who walked a bit too close to us and then tried to attack the owner of the hardware shop who had the audacity to cycle down the street.

We drove to Bergerac last week and he barked at every vehicle on the road.  It was a nightmare.  We are now experimenting to find a solution. We tried to restrict his view by covering the rear window and put up a barrier between the boot and the rear seats.  This worked perfectly until he found a gap and triumphantly popped his head through, the barking commenced almost immediately.  We have filled the gaps and can now travel with him in peace.

For a more long term and dog friendly solution we have ordered a soft cage for him that has blinds you can just pull down to obscure their view of traffic.  He loves crawling into small, covered spaces so we are hoping he will gradually accept the cage.

We love him to bits but he is going to need some further training, we might need to enrol him at doggy school.

  1. I highly recommend Cesar Milan's methods with any sort of behavioral issues in dogs. You can look up his show on YouTube and watch lots of episodes for free. His books are good, too.

  2. I presume you already give a treat for good behaviour and withhold it if a command is disobeyed.

    1. Yes we do, he is very good at some commands. But he just doesn't listen when he's going berserk with his barking.

  3. This is why I could never have a dog. I wouldn't know what to do next.

  4. Bless you for getting training for him. Too many owners just let it go on.

    2. Maybe this is why he ended up in a dogs home.

  5. I know nothing about dogs but it does sound as though you need some expert advice to adjust his behaviour.

    1. We will probably enrol him when we get back to the UK. At the moment he only understands French commands.

  6. If you find a solution to his barking at cars, or other dogs, or postwomen, do let me know.

    1. I guess it's just dog behaviour. At the moment we are focussing on the in-car barking before we hit the M25 at the end of the year.

  8. I've made mistakes with nearly all my dogs by not remembering they can't reason the way a human can - duh! I would heartily suggest that you check this website.

Cesar Milan has a television show here in the states, always a joy to watch. He has good sound advice for just about any dog behavior. Good Luck. I could fall in love with your dog, too. Why can't dogs live as long as humans! I'm too old to start with another, and our dear little Daisy is 11 years old. They surely do get under your skin.
