Not So Smart

This morning Paul and I set off for one of our regular cycle rides but when we got to the bottom of the hill we were met by a sign ‘route barrée’ -  road closed.  A quick discussion at the crossroads and we took a right turn through the forest.  They have been felling a lot of trees this year so the track was well compacted by heavy machinery, not too many sandy patches to bring us down.  Then we decided to take the farmyard route, a little used road that takes us right through the middle of a quintessential rustic farmyard.  (I wrote about it in an earlier blog.)

Farmyard Circus by Molly Brett

This time Paul was going to record the experience using his smart phone video.  The farm is situated on a steep hill so he had to ride precariously, braking with one hand and filming with the other. The ‘cast’ performed perfectly, geese, ducks, hens, cockerels, cats, dogs – they must have been rehearsing for days.  It was mayhem.  Unfortunately the smart phone wasn’t so smart and had turned itself off.  Ah well, there’s always tomorrow.

  1. Please don't re film it. Your illustration of the circus in the farmyard is more than adequate and shows us just how it was.

  3. Not many of those old style farms left nowadays. Neither of my neighbours even have hens.

  4. It is funny, but I could imagine the noise and nothing else when reading this post. Did you do the drawings? We have a deserted farm up the road from us where all the buildings are derelict and the yard is inhabited by chickens and ducks and cats and rats (the size of cats because I have seen them running across the yard) and one farmer next door to us stores straw there and all the animals seem to live happily together in the straw. I took some pictures of it when I was out walking recently. I will publish them sometime so you can see it.

    1. The picture is Farmyard Circus by Molly Brett. The Drunken Chicken is a character invented by my daughter when she was about 13 years old and I did the illustration for her. It was the amazing cacophony of farmyard noise that had me laughing out loud yesterday. I would love to see your pictures.
