A job for the boys

The roof of the grange (open barn) is held up by three solid oak upright timbers resting on individual stones.

The base ends of the timbers had started to rot after centuries of wear.

Paul made some new stone blocks, propped up the roof with some Acrow-props (and a car scissor jack) and cut off the rotten ends.  Note the gardening clogs and lack of hard hats.

With the help of Philippe and Diane he inserted the new blocks.  I hid indoors with my eyes shut.  Well, no, actually I was standing there with the camera.

The result wasn't half bad in my opinion...

... and six years later the roof is still standing.

  1. We call it a cart shed, same thing. Ours looked just the same on the farm, just without the flowers. Could Paul wear shorter shorts please?

    1. Actually we call it a 'hangar'; a 'grange' has walls all around. Nice job!

    2. You're right Cro, silly me, it's a hangar. Maybe I should just call it a cart shed and then I wouldn't get it wrong!

    3. I don't think so Rachel. I don't do Speedos either.

    4. We used to have quite a big one at my first house which we always called 'The Open Barn'. But I was very young.

    1. I was just terrified the whole lot was going to collapse while they were doing it. It's hard to relax around here sometimes.
