Mostly About Rick

Rick has just been outside barking at the rooks that were attacking a squirrel in the trees.  Sometimes nature can be hard to witness.  Yesterday I walked into my bedroom and came face to face with a hawk devouring a blackbird right outside my bay window.  I crept away and left him to his meal.  He must have been hungry because there were just a few feathers left after he flew off.  It’s a pity he chose blackbird instead of pigeon from the menu.

We’ve had Rick for five years now.  He was about four years old when we adopted him so he’s nine years old now and starting to show his age.  A little more greyness around his face and he moves quite stiffly when he gets up in the morning.  He still races after his tennis ball in the garden but doesn’t demand that it is thrown quite so many times.

guarding Sarah's slippers

He loves sitting under Sarah’s desk when she is working or guarding her slippers.

Are you sure there's room for two of us on this chair?

He is extremely affectionate and loves to climb up on laps for cuddles.  He won’t accept that perhaps he is a little too big to be a lap dog.

  1. He is an unusual dog. I would have been terrified to take him on. He turned into a sort of a softie didn't he?

    1. He is all bark and no bite - a real softie.

  2. Rick is a very sweet and loving boy. He knows he is king of his/your castle. The food chain in nature is hard to watch. I tell myself, everything has to eat and nature works to keep the population balanced. Still, hard to watch. Red tail hawks manage rodents on my property and the coyote have recently reduced the wild turkeys roaming about.

    1. I was just surprised to see the hawk when I looked out of the window, it was so close.

  3. You really have been lucky with him haven't you? I am sure it is the way you welcomed him and the way you have treated him. He looks such a lovely dog.

  4. You never mentioned that you had hired a Swedish au pair! (see the last picture). Can you trust Paul when she is around?

  5. He really is a gorgeous dog. I have a great liking for older dogs, that greying of the muzzle gives them something special.

  6. He has the most beautiful face, and I wouldn't have been able to resist him either if I'd seen him at the rescue. Until I saw the photo of him on your lap, I didn't realise he was such a big dog.
Sadly nature can be so cruel - even more cruel than humans.

    1. He is a medium size dog, the fluff makes him look bigger.

  7. I was going to say the same as the previous comment, that I hadn't realised he was so big until I saw him on your lap. He has such an adorable sweet face that you can see he is a lovely boy.

    1. He's a very strong boy too which is why I struggle to hold him when he wants to chase a tractor or the like.
