I am happy to report that I no longer have to climb a ladder to reach the ‘gym’ in our loft room. Last month our new customised steel staircase finally arrived all the way from Holland. It’s a hefty beast but fortunately the delivery guys were happy to help Paul carry it into the bungalow and lift it into position. I’m amazed they managed to get it in without breaking anything. I wasn’t much help really, just hopping around and squeaking “don’t trip on the step, mind the glass door, mind the paintwork…”
The staircase is quite steep – we have plenty of floor space but limited headroom as you climb upwards. However, it is much easier than using a ladder and it definitely looks more stylish. I have no excuse now not to visit the pain cave! Oh, I’ve just remembered, the balustrade isn’t finished yet and I suffer from vertigo…
Rather you than me, Susan! It looks a bit scary. I think I would be better with a ladder.
ReplyDeleteI find it much less scary than the ladder.
DeleteI love the steel spiral stairs. The treads are lovely too. Nice choice. Quite contemporary.
ReplyDeleteThank you, I fitted every single one of those treads!
DeleteThey look fun. Far better than our folding loft ladder that collapsed recently leaving Lady Magnon dangling upside down by her knees!
ReplyDeletePaul did that same trick with the loft ladder a few weeks ago!
DeleteLooks to be a DogFreeZone.
ReplyDeleteMost definitely, although he does like to curl up underneath them in the corner.
DeleteIt looks very stylish Sue. Do you find it easy to climb - there doesn't seem to be much of a handrail to hold on to, and is it easy coming down?
ReplyDeleteThey are fine if you take it slowly. The handrail is an integral part of the staircase. It's actually easier coming down than going up.
DeleteIt looks very " Grand Designs" ! Not sure if it would be any easier than the step ladder affair I have to climb to my husband's office!
ReplyDeleteThey take some getting use to.
DeleteThe stairs look stylish but scary. I guess they much be easier than a ladder though and certainly a better look than a ladder. I suspect you will soon get used to them.
ReplyDeleteThey are probably less scary in reality.
DeleteMust not much!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love it. I have a thing about steel staircases; I even went so far as to recommend one to Cro for the barn but I don't think he shared my enthusiasm at the time.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you like them Rachel. I was very tempted to go for a bright red colour but decided to stay safe with grey.
DeleteI like the way your new stairway looks from an architectural standpoint, but with my leg problems, I would not attempt to go either up or down them even at gunpoint.
ReplyDeleteI did consider a glass tube-like elevator but the cost was astronomical.
DeleteA lot of folk round me have rooms or gyms in their roof space. I might consider it if I was younger but not now.
ReplyDeleteI have used it for cycling throughout the winter and I must say it has helped me to maintain a certain level of fitness. In the past I have found it quite painful to start afresh at this time of year when the weather improves and we start cycling outside.
