Deck the halls with boughs of holly

Deck the halls with boughs of holly, fa la la la - or in my case, deck the fireplace with boughs of Leylandii.

I went out into the garden this morning to scavange some greenery for a Christmassy display indoors.  I picked some rosemary, holly, rose hips, cotoneaster berries and pine cones together with some Leylandii branches.

I put some cling film along the top of the fireplace to protect the polished surface and arranged the foliage around three white candles.  I'm quite pleased with the result.

  1. That's lovely. Understated, traditional, and suits that mantel very well! -Jenn

  5. Fa la la la la, indeed! Looks very pretty. Your festive lineup reminds me that back when I didn't know anything about plants I used to call cotoneaster cotton-Easter, having never heard it, just read it.

    1. I usually call it the prickly bush with the red berries. I can never remember the proper names, I have to check with Paul.

  6. A stylish arrangement, indeed! I'm not bothering to decorate inside the house as I'm not expecting any visitors.

    1. No visitors here either but I get some satisfaction from a few decorations.

  7. Putting clingfilm on the mantelpiece was a masterstroke. Where did you pick up that display tip? Also - shouldn't Paul have helped you or was he off buying your surprise Christmas silver locket containing a small photo of your beloved... Rick?

    1. I just thought it was a good idea to protect the fireplace after a mishap with a Christmas orange last year. The acid from the orange peel eroded the polish! Paul helped me cut the Leylandii, he didn't want me wrecking his hedge.

  8. It'll be a Leylandii tree again for us this year; the saw comes out on Wednesday.

  9. It looks lovely!
Just some twigs with tiny white lights here, oh - and a small modern pyramid shaped Christmas tree which is covered in tiny lights. Just enough to remind me of the season. The fire is modern - wall hung, in black metal, with no mantlepiece, so nowhere to decorate to create a focal point.

    1. Thank you. It is nice to have a mantlepiece to decorate at this time of year. We were thinking of removing it and installing a modern, contemporary inset but we've got used to this one now, it suits the room.
