It’s that time of year when the junior owl patrol use my
window ledges as take off and landing pads.
They leave me with rather spooky ghost prints on my windows where they’ve
got it wrong and done a bit of a face plant.
After dark they often perch on the bathroom window ledge and
peer myopically through the frosted glass.
They are dazzled by the bathroom light and don’t seem to be aware of my
presence.
Sometimes they forget how to find their way back home to
the tower. One morning I opened the
bedroom curtains to find a young owlet asleep on the window sill inside the
half open shutter.

I remember thinking there was a ghost outside one night when I went to the bathroom and I saw a freaky looking face peering in! They're really quite scary when you're not expecting to see one, especially the face.
ReplyDeleteNot forgetting the mysterious heavy breathing!
DeleteA friend of mine in V du P once found 4 baby barn owls which had fallen from their nest. He watched to see if the parents would try to recover them, but they didn't. He then decided to do the job himself and fed them several times a day for several weeks (minced mice) until they were ready to leave. All four survived.
ReplyDeleteWow, that would have taken some dedication. How lovely they all survived.
