Stay Calm

I want this Christmas to be perfect so naturally I am gradually working up a full head of steam and struggling to stay calm.  I always try and plan everything to the ‘nth degree to ensure the festivities run smoothly.  I’m not very good at ‘laid back’.  I worry about ridiculous things like a shortage of Brussels sprouts or the turkey being too dry.

Yesterday the fridge freezer started making strange noises and the fridge light went out.  After giving it a good shake all seems well again; it will probably fail on Christmas Eve.

We are collecting Sarah from Heathrow on Friday evening.  Warnings are already being issued about not travelling on this day as it is the busiest of the year.  I have visions of us being stranded on the motorway and Sarah sitting forlornly in the Arrivals lounge.

Yesterday I put all clean, white linen on the beds.  This morning Rick got very wet and muddy on his walk and decided to jump on my bed to dry off.

I think I need something stronger than a mince pie to calm my nerves.  I really should pull myself together and relax, my family won’t give a toss if things aren’t perfect.

  1. Sue, your very last sentence is so true. It's you, Paul and Rick they've come to share the festive season with - not an immaculate show-place house. They want to relax at home, and enjoy your company.

  2. I am so familiar with these scripts that are running in my head.

  3. You said it all in the last sentence!

  4. My Grandmother's and Mother's Christmases were never 'perfect' and neither were the ones that I have done. That's our family tradition. My favourite was when the ham I was boiling turned out to be pork - I still don't know why!
Have a small glass, keep it topped up and enjoy.

  5. I am getting excited for you Sue and I understand what you mean because I'm just the same - I should go learn your last sentence by heart!

  6. The last two sentences nailed what I was about to say! Pour yourself a glass of something, and know that it will all work out.

  7. But if there's no booze I'm off :-P 🤣

  8. You should ask Paul to give you a languorous oil massage. That will calm you down.

  9. Sue, I could have written this blog - this is me to a T - but I am afraid that if that is the sort of person you are you just have to work at it. Good luck with that and if you find the answer let me know.

  10. Seems that lots of us feel the same as you do. Sarah will be grateful for relief from the awful heat of an Aussie Christmas!
    Merry Christmas.

  11. Be warned: The last time I picked-up Lady Magnon from Heathrow, I was there for about half an hour, and my parking cost was £22. I very nearly punched the man collecting the money. Don't panic over Christmas, it's only like roasting an ordinary Sunday Chicken, but you just leave it in the oven a bit longer!

  12. Thank you everyone for all your comments. I guess we all get a bit stressed out at this time of year. I should know better, I've had years of practice!
