Morgan's Hill

The weather is likely to deteriorate later this week with gales and rain coming in so although it was a bit cold and gray we took Rick out for a long walk this afternoon.  We headed a short distance out of town to Morgan’s Hill*, parked the car and set off along the trail that is part of the Wessex Ridgeway.  It is very high at this point and there is a magnificent view of Cherhill Down and the surrounding chalk downs of Wiltshire.  I didn't have my camera with me so I've borrowed some photos from the internet, clearly taken on a summer's day.

Rick had a wonderful time; the trail was fenced on either side so he was able to run free.  We had the countryside to ourselves today, in summer I imagine it would be a lot busier.

*The name is supposed to have derived from John Morgan who in 1720, having robbed and murdered his uncle, was hung from gallows on the hill before a large crowd.

  1. I have never taken even one country walk in Wiltshire. The pictures remind me that I must head for Wiltshire some time next year.

    1. Soft rolling chalkland and pretty villages, not very dramatic but quite pleasant.

    2. "Not very dramatic but quite pleasant" - a great strapline for the Wiltshire Tourism Authority!

    3. You can tell I'm enthusiastic! I've been spoiled by the Yorkshire Dales and Dordogneshire.

    1. It's between Devizes and Calne, there's a car park and picnic area next to the golf course.

  4. If you are still looking to buy another property you will have to think carefully about the dog walking aspect of the new location. Norfolk is very much an arable farmland area and there are not wild spaces for dog walking that are public. Clearly something important for you to bear in mind.

    1. Very few places on this planet where we could confidently let Rick run free. Yesterday he was back on the lead as soon as we left the fenced trail. But certainly this is something we shall consider during our search.

    2. In Norfolk not only would the dog not run free nor would the owner. There may be lanes and loke ways that look ideal but they are private. There are places to go to take dogs such as Thetford Forest but they involve driving.
