Damp Day

We went out on our bikes early this morning; the dew on the long grass twinkled like jewels in the sunshine and the hedgerows were colourful with buttercups and purple pyramid orchids.  Oops, no, that was on Sunday.  Today it is cloudy and drizzling.  We were in two minds whether to go out or not.

“Shall we?”
“I don’t know.”
“We need the exercise.”
“It looks very damp.”
“It’s only low cloud, it’s stopped raining now, let’s go.”

It rained all the way.

It was good to get outside though.  I saw a rabbit on the track ahead “Run, bunny run,” I shouted. Rabbits don’t have long, fluffy tails.  It was a cat.  I blamed the rain on my goggles. We cycled alongside the railway line and passed the train heading in the opposite direction south towards Agen.

“Why does the train driver always toot at us?” Paul asked.
“Because he can hardly ignore a mad woman in neon pink frantically waving at him,” I replied.

I just can’t resist, I get a childlike pleasure from waving at trains and getting a toot.

  1. Mature women need a nice toot now and then.

  2. I always wave at trains. We're so use to waving at neighbors as they drive by us here in Georgia that when we go somewhere else we have to remember that not everyone waves at passing cars.

    1. If someone waves I always wave back. (Then you realise they're waving at the person behind you!)

  3. Haha. There's nothing wrong with waving at trains even if you are a grownup! :)

  4. We don't have any trains now, but I used to wave to the bin men on the summer mornings when they were up and about around 6:30 a.m., and I was out with the dogs. Sadly those days have gone, and the lone operative in his hi-tech machine is far too busy with his hi-tech knobs and levers to wave back !

    2. Well, it's more the bins and machine that collect the rubbish that are hi-tech ! The operative sits in his cab, pushes a few buttons et voila ! two rods grab hold of the bin and tip it up into the top of the dust cart. Untouched by human hand these days, and just means one man instead of three or four - economy everywhere these days.

  5. Most of the train drivers will give a blast on the horn to people who wave out in the country around here. I always think it is a nice touch in this day and age. If there are children too they get more than one blast, and maybe three. I like to wave to trains too!

  6. It's nice that he toots when you wave. Brings a smile to your face and the world needs more smiles today.

  7. I always wave at people driving very old cars, and they usually wave back, or hoot. I refuse to consider myself odd.
