Should have listened to Saffy

My daughter has turned into Saffy from Ab Fab (Absolutely Fabulous - British sitcom).  She thinks she has very irresponsible parents.  I protest, we are merely a bit daft.

Kat gave us a gift before she left for Brize today, a pair of plastic tongs so that Paul could avoid electrocution by using metals ones for getting toast out of the toaster.

Early this morning she told me to be careful when taking Rick out because it was still a bit dark.  In my defence my mishap would have happened in exactly the same way in broad daylight.  It had been raining and the white frosty winter wonderland had disappeared so it did not occur to me that the ground was slick and shiny with ice, not merely wet.  It happened very quickly, one minute I was walking towards our driveway and then the next moment I was up in the air.  I came down to earth with a terrific thump and then slid along the ice, gradually coming to a halt next to the car.

I managed to get into a sitting position to find Rick next to me, shaking and trying to keep upright on the ice.  Kat had heard my shriek and came hurrying to the front door with Paul.  I warned them to stay away, otherwise they too would slip on the treacherous black ice.  I grabbed the car door handle and pulled myself upright.  Walking alongside the car I passed the dog lead to Kat who pulled Rick to safety, and I eventually managed to get back indoors.

I am now nursing a painful wrist, a bruised butt and suffering Saffy’s admonishments of  “I told you to be careful.”

  1. Sounds awful. Hope you don't suffer too much and recover soon. It's scary having a fall.

  2. As I can confirm with my broken hip last October - it is easy to be wise after the event.

  3. Lucky you didn't break a wrist. Take care and water on top of ice is deadly.

  4. Glad you were able to get up and get inside to safety. Ice is dreadfully scary to me and I avoid going out when I see icy patches. Hope you rest, relax and recover quickly!

  5. That was a shocking fall. I loved AbFab, remember all the champagne they drank?

  6. So sorry to hear about your fall. You need Arnica and sympathy in equal measure! Take care and try to persuade Rick he doesn't really need a walk when it's icy underfoot.

    1. I usually send Paul out when it's icy. Vey extreme and unusual conditions outside today.

  7. Ab Fab is one of my all time favorites and when I saw your blog post title I immediately knew what you were referencing! Haha!

Do be careful...sometimes Saffy was worth listening to!

  8. Oh dear.I do hope you havn’t broken your wrist.A neighbour warned us the other day about the black ice so we stayed indoors. It looked perfectly safe to us.We didn’t venture out for two days but that means no exercise so doesn’t help my weight gain during COVID.

    1. Just didn't occur to me that it was icy after it had been raining. My weight will definitely go up now.

  10. Black ice is so dangerous. It is invisible until we slip and fall. I hope you have no wrist fractures as they do take a while to heal. Take care and rest to heal.

    1. It took me so much by surprise. Well strapped up today so hopefully it will mend soon.

  11. You are so lucky! I had a similar fall and ended up with a plate, 4 screws and 2 pins in my ankle. As a consequence I have terrible arthritis in it 25 years later. Maybe a run around the garden will be good enough for Rick until it's nicer out. Hope you didn't break your wrist.

    1. I hoping it's just a sprain because I don't fancy visiting any hospitals right now. You were very unlucky with your ankle.

  12. May I suggest a Cottage Loaf or something similar. Big slices of toast come out easier! I need Saffy here to warn me not to do stupid things. I tore a muscle in my left arm yesterday; lifting heavy Oak longs. Silly me.

    1. It's so hard to do things one handed isn't it? Unfortunately I have discovered I can still vacuum with one hand.

  13. Hope that you haven't broken anything. Did your fall feel like slow motion and you have time to wonder what is going to hurt the most?

    1. There was definitely a moment before I 'landed' that I thought "this is going to hurt".

  14. Oh Gawd Sue!! Put some hooch in your tea & stay indoors! Brings back memories of my great fall - in front of a running car, in the drive, in front of the neighbors! came down on my wrist & knee about a half inch from a major face plant & had to crawl through the snow to my patio to get myself up. I wore a wrist brace for 6 weeks. I'm glad I did it 15 years ago & not today.

    1. At least I didn't suffer the embarrassment of my neighbours seeing me fall.

  15. I hope that by now you have recovered from that nasty fall Sue. You should consider having several CCTV cameras installed around your property so that Kat can keep a watchful eye on the pair of you via her smartphone.

    1. My wrist is still painful; I've had to swap places with Paul on the sofa so that I can reach my glass of wine. (Kat would just love that CCTV idea.)

  16. People need to quit falling down! This is a direct order from America...where there appears to be little to no order at the moment. Glad you're okay, no butts about it.

    1. It was the first time I have ever slipped up on ice like that, hopefully the last time!
