Obelisk

April 2020

Earlier this year I wrote about this broken lamp stand that we recycled and turned into an obelisk for our climbing rose.  The rose is now in full flower and the obelisk is doing a great job supporting the blooms.

I have waited almost two years for my agapanthus to bloom.  Finally some flower heads have appeared.  I hope they don't get washed away by the rain before they fully open.

  1. Congrats! That obelisk/ex-lamp is better looking than most of the offerings at the garden shops.

    1. I was really happy to recycle the lamp rather than throwing it away.

  3. Amazing how the rose has grown since April. One day I'll learn how to prune roses and be brave enough to try it

    1. Paul will cut it right down to about 18 inches in early Spring. Most roses love being pruned hard.

    1. Last year I didn't get any flowers at all from the agapanthus. I grow them in pots so I might bring them indoors before the rain arrives this week.

  5. Agapanthus grow like weeds in coastal southern California. I miss them here in AZ.

    1. We used to see them everywhere when I visited my daughter in NSW Australia - great big clumps of them. I don't think they do so well with the English weather.

  6. I thought that Obelisk was a character in Asterix the Gaul comic books. Your climbing rose has done brilliantly in just three months. Quite amazing really.

  9. I've never had much luck with roses, but my wife bought a new one this year which looks as if it's thriving. Yours looks beautiful.

    1. We inherited the rose with the property but it needed taming. It's a beauty.

  10. Great obelisk, even better rose. Agapanthus flowers best once its roots get a bit bound up - as the clump gets bigger they will flower more. They should thrive in UK, they are a weed on the West Coast of South Island NZ - where they live with permanently wet feet.

    1. It's a pretty flower so I hope it does establish itself and give me more blooms next year.

  11. The rose is amazing, and how well it's grown in such and short time. I love the brilliant blue of the agapanthus. I'll look out for that particular shade when I start adding to the garden in the autumn. Not sure how well they will do, unless we have a wet winter, or I water copiously. It's incredibly hot now - 28º just after 6:30 this morning when I took Inca out for her morning walk. For the rest of the day we'll hunker down in the shade and only come out in the late evening, when it's cooler.

    1. Just starting to rain this afternoon, apparently we won't see any decent sunshine until the weekend.
