Medieval Village

Today we cycled up through Waddingham and across the busy A15 to Kirton Lindsey.  Shortly after leaving the town we turned right towards Gainsthorpe and decided to visit the medieval village that was signposted.  We rode down a farm lane and arrived at the site.  The entrance gate was roped shut and there were cattle in the field.  No doubt an interesting site if you are an archaeologist  or history buff but to me it looked like a field with a few lumps and bumps.  I certainly wasn’t going to climb the gate and mix with the cows to investigate further.  It was a pleasant place to stop for a short break before we headed on towards Hibaldstow and back home through Redbourne.

Gainsthorpe Medieval Village
Every morning I have a slight feeling of dread because I know it is Paul’s ambition to ride to Nettleton Top.  This a very high mountain hill on the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds. (34m – 164 m climb!) We used to climb steep hills in France all the time but I am well out of practice.  My nemesis was a hill by the name of Mespoulie that I struggled so hard to climb on one occasion that my bicycle pedal snapped off.  I’ve got a feeling that he has Nettleton Top in his sights for this weekend.  Well, I suppose the views from the top will be good and it should be downhill on the way back.

  1. Interested to read that you went to Kirton Lindsey - not all that far from Aisthorpe which is where we lived from 1958 to 1964 - we bought the Old School in Aisthorpe, opposite the church and had it converted into a house. We moved in when my son was ten days old and lived there until my then husband was moved to Lichfield when we had to upsticks and move with him.

    1. We haven't cycled over that way much yet but our GP surgery is at Ingham which is close to Aisthorpe.

  3. I quite surprised that they even bother to signpost that medieval village; such sites exist all over Britain, and are usually ignored.

    1. I'm glad we didn't make a special trip out to visit the site. Looked to me, in spite of the English Heritage sign, that the farmer didn't encourage visitors.

  4. Spouse abuse is quite common in cycling circles. Have you considered counselling? I have seen that medieval village in Ordnance Survey mapping. There is I believe another one near by and there are a few in the Lincolnshire Wolds.

    1. I try not to abuse Paul too much but sometimes I can't help myself.

  5. Before you set off on the ride to Nettleton Top, you should make it quite clear to Paul, that on your return (after a successful trip), you expect more than a measly finger of Kit Kat as your reward. Insist on a box of luscious chocolates at the very least!
