Summer

Southern and central Europe is sweltering but the weather in Lincolnshire is quite delightful at the moment.  We are making the most of it and spending nearly all day outside in the garden.  Long, leisurely lunches on the terrace - this is everything I love about the summer.

"Are you sure you can eat that much potato with your poached egg?"  What a silly question.
Paul has been harvesting some of the elephant garlic that he planted earlier in the year.  It has to 'cure' for a couple of weeks before eating so he has hung it from an old vegetable rack.   It's not easy finding big garlic in the local shops so we're hoping this is going to be a success.

  3. That kind of simple summer salad makes for a delightful lunch on warm days. Tomorrow (Saturday) we are going to get a blast of the African heat that has roasted most of France these past few days.

  4. Envy you your fresh garlic! I usually plant some in the fall but only four have sprouted this year. They will be ready later in the summer. Thanks for the tip to let it cure for a couple of weeks.

  6. Lovely garlic! I try to buy local garlic if I can (meaning, not from China). That looks like a good size.-Jenn

    1. The supermarkets here only seem to sell very small garlic bulbs.

    1. We can't buy those lovely big, pink bulbs here. Paul planted fifty plants so that should keep us supplied for a while.

  9. Ironic isn't it - when we lived in the UK, we ate outdoors as often as possible, even in Winter, and looked forward to doing the same once we'd moved here. Sadly, even with blinds and umbrellas for shade, it's now far too hot !
What a lovely meal that looks - very envious of those potatoes. The garlic looks wonderful too - I absolutely love any savoury food flavoured with garlic and the more the better!

    1. If we were in France right now we'd be hiding indoors with the shutters closed. I love eating whole roasted garlic bulbs. Keeps the vampires away.

  10. My mother was the 'Crazy Gardener' in our house. She discovered Elephant garlic & planted a big patch one year. As per usual, her harvest was phenomenal!! She dehydrated most of it & then ran it through the food processor to make garlic powder. I'll bet she still has some left in bags in the freezer!! When I was a kid we ate garlic sprinkled on our food like salt because mom believed it cured everything. It must have because I don't remember being sick except for the usual measles, chicken pox etc that were common then.
