November Saturday

the mist just starting to lift to reveal blue sky

It was cold and foggy when I took Rick out for his early morning walk, it was quite spooky trying to see our way in the misty gloom.  The hedgerows looked so pretty decorated with thin spider webs bejewelled with drops of dew.   It certainly felt very autumn like.

It’s Saturday so Paul is cooking tonight.  Scampi and chips are on the menu.  We shall be decadent and eat them in front of the television with a good bottle of wine.  We are watching The  Queen’s Gambit, a drama about a young girl with an astonishing talent for playing chess. It’s an unusual but engaging series.  I might have to go and dig out our chess set from the attic.  I can play at a very basic level but I’ve never studied any strategy or particular opening moves.

Eating on the sofa while watching television is a rare treat.  Only ever on a Saturday evening and when it’s pizza or scampi. Otherwise we always sit up at the table.

Paul waiting for his supper last night (tagine).  He is tossing a tennis ball while he waits.

  1. I hope he didn't knock his glass of wine over with that tennis ball. Lol! Couldn't he lend a hand in the kitchen while you're cooking? I'd have him washing the pans!!!

    1. Paul always clears up after the meal, or if he cooks then I clear up. He does his fair share!

    2. I'll let him off, then . . . as long as his wine stays safe!

  2. We always eat at the table in our dining room but this week - because of the decorating project - we have had to eat in the front room. I don't like it at all. One is tempted to say something mischievous about Paul's tennis ball picture but thankfully one has been able to suppress that urge.

  3. That’s a great photo! Is it still the old chess set in the wooden box with the doodles?

    1. Sadly that old doodled set went long ago to a car boot. Nowadays we have a very posh set, that has rarely been used!

  4. Sharing the cooking and clean-up sounds good to me. Rick is well entertained with ball throwing and wonderful daily walks. Lucky boy. Board games are certainly coming in handy, I recently brought out the scrabble board.

    1. I love a good game of scrabble but I use an app on my phone. It's great, it does all the math for me.

  5. Expect a visit from the 'Dining Table Police'. It's 4 years for eating in front of the TV.

    1. Family meals around the table were always sacrosanct when the girls were young and it is still rare for us to do 'TV meals'.

  6. Geeze . . . . . I don't even have a dining room table! Or a kitchen one either.

  7. Eating at the dining table was always sacrosanct here too. For a while, even after my husband died, I ate all meals at the table, but somehow, it wasn't the same, with no company, no one to chat to. Now the nights have drawn in I frequently eat in front of the TV - something I vowed I'd never do!

    1. It's a very different situation when you are on your own.

  8. We have begun to eat most of our meals in front of the television. However, now that the election is over, we can probably set aside a great part of that anxious news watching and begin to eat at a proper table again.

    1. Anxious news watching is really not a good thing to do at meal time. I hope everything gets properly resolved soon.
