Cruel Jack Frost

I cannot recall an April with so many frosts; this month's sustained icy mornings have taken a real toll on the garden.   Although Paul has been religiously covering up the tender plants with fleece every evening it has been impossible to protect everything against Jack Frost's icy fingers.

The flame tree's flowers went over very quickly this year.

My tree peony has lost many buds and is very late to bloom.

The new growth on most of the roses has been affected.

The hydrangea has been very badly hit.  We will have to cut it right back in a week or so.

At least everything looks healthy in the greenhouse!  Hopefully this arctic spell will be over soon and things can recover and get planted out.

Rick is untroubled with these garden woes and continues to do yoga with Mr Bunny

  1. It's turning cold here this week, as well. That's a shame about the peony! But you're right, the stuff in the greenhouse looks wonderful. -Jenn

    1. It is widespread, even south of Watford has been hit by the frost.

  3. Very frosty here too. The cold is very hard on everything in partial bloom and bud. My largest Tulip Magnolia tree in partial bloom got hit with the cold overnight and now the blooms and buds are falling to the ground. Today the Elizabeth Magnolia has lots of tightly closed buds so this tree has not been impacted...yet.

    1. Our neighbour has a beautiful magnolia tree, it was in full bloom and then the flowers went brown overnight.

    1. I'm not expecting too many blooms on the hydrangea or my jasmine though.

    2. We had beautiful weather for the last 4 or 5 days and all the snow was gone. Then yesterday we got 3 more inches of snow. We were a little anxious, to say the least, as our GD was driving home, 660Km, through the mountains, from visiting her parents. She text several times to let me know how the roads were. Because of all that warm weather the snow didn't stick to the roads so they were clear. I was so glad when she let us know she was home.

    3. You must have been so anxious Janice, and relieved when she got home okay.

  5. Rick and I have a similar approach to gardening - I love my garden though, just want someone else to do it these days! Should I feel guilty? No, can't do everything I guess.

  7. Our weather is changing as from today, and as we have not dissimilar weather, I imagine yours will too. Thank goodness.

  8. How sad about your beautiful plants, I do hope they will recover to bloom again.
The mornings here have been cooler than usual too, with a chilly wind, but the afternoons have been warm with something like a 15-20º rise in temperature. Most of my garden plants are long established and seem to take the changes in their stride.
Good for Rick and his yoga buddy - is that Downward Dog they're practising? (Sorry, couldn't resist asking!!!)
