Just a load of rubbish

Calne is well known for its piggy past – the Harris pork processing factory provided employment to locals until its closure in 1983.

I walked with Paul into town this morning to the post office, he was sending his DNA swabs off to Houston, Texas.  The post office is situated in the newsagent and we had to queue adjacent to shelves loaded with Cadbury's chocolate bars on sale.  I successfully resisted the temptation to buy any but I was drooling a bit by the time we got to the counter.  I was going to take some photos of the town (Calne) but it looked glum and depressing in the drizzle.  The bronze pig statue in the mall looked like he had a runny nose with the rain dripping off the end of his snout.

Walking back home I was dismayed at the amount of rubbish littering the street.  Why don’t some people have any pride or consideration for their environment?  Occasionally I go out armed with my litter grabbing stick and a bag and gather old pizza boxes, cans and bottles from the verges.  It’s not much but at least I can look out of my window and enjoy a litter free neighbourhood.

In Sydney, on the other side of the world, Buddy and his humans take part in regular Sea Shepherd beach clean ups.  Last weekend they visited his favourite beach, Sirius Cove, where 60 volunteers collected an amazing 91 kgs of rubbish.  Well done Buddy, I need you in Calne.

  1. We don't have much litter on our street but when I see any I pick it up and I have been known to chase after litter louts saying very politely, "Excuse me, you appear to have dropped this!" Their jaws drop.

    1. I tried that tactic once and got a stream of abuse in return.

  2. I had a colleague who took a stick and picked up litter across the park as she walked to her car every evening.

    1. Good for her. There are quite a few people who do this ad hoc around our housing estate.

  3. We have central litter collection points, and the litter bins are enormous, the size of a small family car. It amazes me how many people just throw their bags out of the car as they pass by, or leave them on the floor, leaning against the side of the bin. It seems that it is just too much trouble to do things properly.

    1. We have those big bins in France. Annoys me that people never seem to be able to close the lid afterwards.

    2. Me too, I frequently close them as I go past!

  4. I was watching some wildlife TV programme recently; they were doing a piece about Otters and I noticed in the background several soft drink cans chucked into the undergrowth. People can be such Pigs, although Pigs themselves would never do such things (especially your one).

    1. p.s. I often dig small holes with my foot to bury people's rubbish. I can't stand finding things thrown from cars etc.

    2. Cigarette packets and drinks cans are the worst.

  5. I used to do litter picks in the fields by the roadside perimeter of our farm. I never had enough bags. It was unbelieveable what was thrown from cars. Do you remember I once did a post about Calne and bacon factories!

    1. Yes I do remember. You are probably the only other person on here that has ever been to Calne!
