A Trip To The Vet

Yesterday we took Rick to the vet to arrange for his passport and to check with someone about his sore paw.   We went in just after 9.00 a.m. to make an appointment but were told there was no appointment system but to return between 2.30 and 4.30 in the afternoon.  We went back at 2.30 and there were already three dogs in front of us in the queue.

All was going well until a feline emergency arrived, it looked like someone’s cat had been involved in an accident.  We waited for two hours.  Rick behaved beautifully, I got extremely fidgety.  I’m not very good at waiting.  Paul told me to go and sit in the car.  I sat quietly.

Eventually we got to see the vet and he explained that a grass seed had become embedded in Rick’s paw.  Apparently it’s been a very bad year for grass seeds and a lot of animals have suffered, either by inhaling the seeds or paw problems.  I thought this countryside would be ideal for dog walking but there are hidden dangers.  I’m going to have to check Rick’s paws on a daily basis.  The vet cleaned Rick’s paw and gave him an antibiotic injection plus his rabies jab which is needed for his passport.  Rick’s passport now enables him to travel freely within Europe.

The heavens opened while we were in the surgery and it was absolutely tipping down with rain.  Paul fetched the car so that Rick and I didn’t get too wet.  There was a lot of thunder and more rain after we got home but storms don’t seem to bother this perfect dog.  He had his dinner and promptly threw up, just missing my expensive rug.  Side effect of the antibiotic no doubt.

  1. Sorry to hear about his sore paw, but he seems to have handled the situation ok, apart from the barfing. I hate waiting, I'm the world's worst.

    1. He was such a good boy. Didn't even mind the cats in the surgery.

  2. If Rick can now travel freely throughout Europe, he will need his own vehicle. May I suggest a vintage Citroen 2CV with "Rick" sprayed on the sides.

    1. Wouldn't that be great? I've always wanted a Citroen 2CV but Mr Sensible says it would be highly impractical.

  3. Your weather has come over here - you got it first early this morning and now it is here.
Rick is faultless even down to the point of being more patient than you!

    1. I'm sure this good behaviour won't last. (I am the most impatient person in the world.)

  4. Poor Rick, but it's good that he was so well behaved, especially with other dogs around. Now he's got his passport he'll probably be off on quite a few little adventures !
The vet I use is excellent, and operates an appointments system during their lengthy opening hours, 10:00 a.m. - 1 p.m. then again from 5:00 - 8 p.m., and they work on Saturday mornings too, so the waiting room isn't usually crowded.

    1. It was okay until the emergency cat arrived. I think Rick enjoyed seeing all the other animals.

  5. It's great that Rick can wait patiently at the vet! What a good boy!

Our dogs have to have a rabies shot every year, along with shots for Parvo and Distemper. We also have to keep them on heartworm prevention year-round. I guess there are more diseases for them to catch over here.

    1. We have to give worm treatment every three months and 24 hours before taking him to the UK. He's already had all his other vaccinations.

  7. Glad that Rick was taken care of, and in the big scheme of things, was something minor. :)

    1. Just a small thing but I had hoped we wouldn't be visiting the vet quite so quickly with him.

  8. I remember our Monty stopping one day, lifting his front paw, and looking at me in a pleading way. I did my Androcles bit, removed a thorn, and he continued as if nothing had happened.

Poor Bok was petrified yesterday afternoon. He was shaking for two hours. You're fortunate that Rick is OK with storms.

    1. He was OK even with that big bang at lunchtime today. I nearly spilt my wine but Rick didn't bat an eyelid.
