Sierra Nevada

We said goodbye to Javier’s place this morning and drove across the Sierra Nevada towards the east coast of Spain.  The scenery was stunning, from snow capped mountains with the pink and white blossom of almond trees in the foreground, to Wild West cowboy country.  The photos were taken from the moving car so the quality isn’t great.

We arrived on the Costa Blanca this afternoon and have checked in to our hotel at Calpe for two nights.  We have a fabulous view of the Rock of Ifach, a huge volcanic rock jutting out into the sea.  I might climb it tomorrow.  Or I might just head for the roof top bar.

    1. It certainly had the wow factor. I was just amazed at the scale of everything, it was vast.

  2. The'Rock of Ifach' sounds Welsh. Do I spy swimmers in the water? It's been quite cold here, but better weather on the way for next week.

    1. Blue skies but very windy. We've been very lucky with the weather though, lots of sunshine.

  4. Good heavens Sue - we live in the foothills behind Calpe - it's our nearest metropolis ! A place where I meet up with my friends for breakfast or lunch - out of season.
Are you staying at the Sol y Mar? You can walk along the paseo, past the harbour to La Fossa beach, on the other side of the Peñon (Rock). It is usually much more sheltered, but sadly, over developed. You will see the occasional swimmer even now, as the water can be several degrees warmer.
If you feel like a run in the car, take the twisty coast road (it's a bit hairy in places) to Moraira, and then on to El Portet which is a pretty little place, and about as unspoiled as it gets hereabouts these days. If you go inland, have a look at the Jalon Valley. There's a road with fantastic views, from beside the petrol station in Jalon town, back over the hills, down onto the main road (N332)and back into Calpe.

    1. Well fancy that! I'll be round for tea. Sadly we are only here for today and we're off early tomorrow heading north to Coulliere (France). We've been staying at the Hotel Bahia (next door to the Sol y Mar) with fantastic views of the bay. Very impressed with Calpe and this area, it's very pretty and not too busy at this time of year.

    2. What a pity we didn't know you'd be here, I would have put the kettle on, or we could have met up for a coffee and chat ! Next time you're this way let me know.
We know Coulliere and that area of France well - it's one of our favourites. Last time we stayed at Les Elmes which a small beach on the other side of Banyuls. It's an area we always stay in when we take the dogs with us as is less than a day's drive from here. The Costa Brava is very pretty too, and well worth exploring at some time. Glad you liked this area, it's not all like Benidorm, though we all feel that Calpe is trying hard to compete !

    1. It's been great to see a part of Spain away from the Costas.
