The Maitre'd Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest

We drove to Bergerac airport early this morning and said our farewells to Kat and Tom;  the week has passed incredibly quickly but we had a fabulous time.  Coming home the house felt empty and rather forlorn.  I decided to combat my sadness by stripping beds and vacuuming, keeping busy.  Afterwards I still felt sad but at least the house was clean.

Last night we had dinner at a local restaurant.  The once pristine auberge is looking a little shabby and ramshackle these days but the food is good and the garden setting with verdant shrubbery is very pretty.  The owner is quite charming but a bit wacky and absent minded.  We had to remind him to bring the wine we ordered (an excellent Baron de Rothschild Mouton Cadet).  However, he was in his element when the dining room was suddenly invaded by a dozen or so large flying insects that strongly resembled hornets.  He grabbed an electrified tennis racket and wandered among the tables swiping and zapping the creatures.  It was a truly surreal scene. We must have been feeling very tranquil after the wine because none of us panicked.

The vineyards are heavy with almost ripe purple grapes.  Philippe erected several of his signature scarecrows amidst his vines yesterday.  Hopefully the storms forecast for next week will not damage the fruit.

    1. The forecast keeps changing. Now they're saying it's just a risk of storm and maybe some showers. We'll just have to wait and see.

  3. My forecast says four days of 'light rain', but we'll see. We need heavy rain for Cepes. The last time we were at that restaurant we had a really splendid meal, later in the night I was sick; I think it had all been too rich. On my next visit I'll order a more balanced meal.

    1. Funnily enough I had a slightly upset tummy afterwards and attributed it to the richness of the meal.

  4. The Big Book Sale (held twice a year by Phoenix Assn.) is on the 24th of this month at Campsegret, N21 north of Bergerac and I'll be looking for David Lagercrantz Girl in the Spiders Web and other titles suggested here and on blogs I read.
T Storms with heavy rain for us but I'm sure that by Wednesday it will have changed. Always jam yesterday, jam tommorrow but never jam today.
