Slim Pickings

Philippe's scarecrow

Philippe has put up a scarecrow in a vain attempt to keep the birds away from his cherry trees.  I’m not sure it’s worth it this year.  I picked half a dozen from our tree this morning together with four raspberries and a handful of strawberries from the garden.  Slim pickings.

Usually we have bucketfuls to gorge ourselves on, or turn into chutney or brandied cherries.  I remember the first spring we were here.  Paul came into the kitchen with a puzzled look on his face.

“Philippe’s just asked me to go and get some mice.”
“Mice?”
“Yes, souris.”
“Very strange.  You don’t suppose he meant cerises?”
“Cerises?”
“Yes, cherries?”

Half an hour later Paul returned home with a basketful of cherries. Not a mouse in sight.

  1. My neighbour (now deceased) once put a radio in her Cherry tree. The Starlings must have loved the music, as the tree was even more filled than ever.

    1. I'm not sure anything really works but scarecrows are rather fun.

  2. You and Cro made me laugh this morning!

That remimds me that I haven't eaten one single cherry this year; I haven't seen any in the supermarkets either (I think)! Now I am craving cherries!

    1. We have them in the supermarkets here but they are very expensive at the moment.

  3. We had souris d'agneau and the lamb shanks were delicious. Cherries have had to come from Grand Frais so far.

    1. I can remember being a bit puzzled by that when I first saw it on a menu.

  4. How wonderful the sun is. Our cherries always remain sour - they just don not get enough sun.

    1. It always amazes me how much the sun affects the ripening process and amount of sugar in the fruit. Last year the cherries and strawberries were really very sweet.
