Kinky Sewing Bee

The Great British Sewing Bee continues to enthral me (I’m easily enthralled) and this week’s episode had a hint of kinky about it.  The theme was the Swinging 60’s and the first challenge was to make a colour block shift dress in the style of the original Ralph Lauren Mondrian inspired sixties version.

Jade made her colour block dress in grey, black and white.  I think that’s called monochrome.

The kinky part came when the sewers were required to make something out of a plastic mac.  Claudia Winkleman makes me laugh with her irreverent remarks.  She watches Charlotte attempting to transform a plastic mac into a trendy piece of clothing.  I can’t think of anyone who doesn’t want a lilac see-through PVC crop top.”

Patrick Grant was very taken with a pink neon top that reminded him of a nerdy sailor.  What the heck is a nerdy sailor?

The winning garment of the week was a beautifully sewn Jackie Kennedy style jacket.  Poor Angeline was sent home after getting her colour blocks the wrong way round and a very wonky hem on her coat.

I’ve got an old PVC shower curtain upstairs, I’m going to make Paul a pair of shorts.  They will come in handy on a wet day.

    1. Actually I think it's got 'water' stamped all over it! Stripes would be hard to pattern match.

  3. I havent seen this nor read properly what you have written but what I scanned reminds me of a girl at my school and the late 1960s. She always came top in our year in everything and was an only child of elderly parents and thought to be frumpy but went on to Oxford. We went out to see Polanski's Macbeth in a school party in the evening. She turned up the most trendyly dressed in PVC, THE most trendy gear of that fashion year. I was gobsmacked. She breezed around all cool all night and our mouths dropped open. I still know her but she is still very unapproachable and I would never be able to discuss it with her. I never had a PVC mac or a Mondrian dress but I had plenty of Mary Quant stuff.

    1. I never had anything cool as a teenager, it was all home made stuff. I just wanted something shop bought. God, that makes me sound as if I lived in a cave or something! There weren't many designer boutiques in the Yorkshire Dales.

    2. My dresses were made at home but I had a Mary Quant outfit as a treat once and the plum lipstick from Biba.
