A Dose of Culture

Today Sarah and Andy decided we needed a dose of culture and took us to Sydney’s Art Gallery.  The Archibald, Wynne and Sulman exhibition is an annual event with prizes awarded to the best portrait, landscape and subject painting.

The Usurpers (self-portrait) by Michael McWilliams

two art connoisseurs

It was an interesting exhibition although I was completely perplexed by some of the entries.  Can anyone explain to me the merit of this particular entry by James Drinkwater? I just find his description a load of guff!

Arriving in Nice, France

I think these should win the prize for prettiest shoes.

  1. I don't know which I dislike most, the painting or the description. Before reaching the description I looked at the painting and saw it was a collection of bits taken from Matisse paintings or at the very least Matisse lookalikes. When I read the description it made it even worse. Australia give out art scholarships like confetti. I don't know if he fits into this but art scholarships wherever always seem to end up in the hands of those least deserving. Nice pictures of the rest of the day.

    1. I'm glad you feel the same. The painting was clumsy and when I read the bombastic description it just annoyed me. Emperor's new clothes sort of thing.

    1. They are Mary Janes by Hot Chocolate Design. (My daughter has gradually moved from teetering high heels to comfortable flatties!)

  6. I like the exterior 'frame' of the painting, but not the inside bits. Otherwise, I don't remember Nice being like that!

    1. The painting looked even worse close up - it didn't' speak to me' at all.

  7. We saw the Archibald and Suliman for the first time last year and I loved them. Haven't seen any of this year's crop though. I guess they are more interesting if you recognise the subjects.
The Nice painting is not for me ...but I LOVE the shoes !!!

    1. The winner of the Archibald prize was a portrait of Barry Humphries, definitely recognised him! It was an excellent painting too.
