Books and TV

I’ve just had a new book delivered, Big Sky by Kate Atkinson. It was cheaper to buy the paperback than have it put on my Kindle.  I’m a fan of Atkinson’s writing and this is her latest work of fiction featuring private detective Jackson Brodie .  One of the reasons I like these stories are that they are based in North Yorkshire, an area I used to know so well.

Very easy and entertaining reading.  Can’t wait to start it but I am trying to hold off until I’ve finished my current book Why the Dutch are Different by Ben Coates.  This is a travelogue/history written in the style of Bill Bryson, but not as funny.  I’m learning a lot about the country, not least that the Dutch are tall and strong due to the amount of milk that they drink!

We have just finished watching an excellent Nordic noir Swedish mystery series on channel 4 catch up.  It was called The Truth Will Out (Det som göms i snö) and based on an element of fact.  I thoroughly enjoyed it. The characters and actors were refreshingly understated, very different to the  usual British and Amercian TV dramas.

  1. No deep thoughts here, but you may have just sold a book. I LOVE Kate Atkinson.

  2. I wrote down The Truth Will Out, the series sounds appealing. I see that the book you have says "supremely funny" on the cover, that sounds good.

  3. This made me smile, My Dutch friends are both quite small in stature so don't fit the mould there - but it is an understatement to say that they like cheese. When they stay they like it every meal in one form or another. We live near to the Wensleydale Creamery Factory and they love to go and walk round the shop where they have cubes of their cheese to sample. The last time Frans went round he had a sample of each of the 16 on offer, couldn't decide which he liked so sampled all of them againon the way back. They also adore buttermilk for breakfast.

    1. That made me laugh! The problem with e-books is you can't see them sitting in the shelf waiting to be read.

  6. I loved all the Bill Bryson books; especially the one about Australia, which I think should be obligatory reading for all Aussie schoolchildren.

  7. I have just finished ( half an hour ago) " Longbourn" by Jo Baker. It is Pride and Prejudice from the point of view of the servants. An excellent read. Kate Atkinson is one of my favourites too, and I have several of her later novels still to read. Hope to find them at our Oxfam bookshop, if I ever go back there to do a shift!

    2. It was a book club read and the meeting was last night....6 people out of 7 really enjoyed it so I feel happy to recommend it. Knowledge of P and P not really necessary for the enjoyment but it probably helps a bit!

  8. Not a name I can recall hearing before, although the name Jackson Brodie rings a bell - maybe I have one somewhere on my Kindle. I'll look out for her in future, as I love detective novels. The majority I buy on my Kindle are of that genre.
If it's one of a series, I'd better start at number one and work my way through!
